Statement following the death of Pope Francis.

Today we are waking to the news that Pope Francis has passed away.

He will be remembered as the ‘The People’s Pope’, his smile of joy was synonymous with his vigour for hope, for compassion, peace, equality and social justice, as he stood up for those poorest and most vulnerable; placing him as the most progressive Pope for generations.

On these days of reflection and renewal during Easter, he is a reminder that one candle can light the world, and that we must continue where he left, extending hope through humility and service, that together we can bring peace and seek a sunstainable future for us all.

I join millions around the world in grieving the death of His Holiness Pope Francis, and wishing him Godspeed.
