Born in Merseyside, Matt has been entrenched in politics his whole life; the son of two teachers Matt lived through the Thatcher era, and took a keen interest in pursuing politics later in life. While he considered entering into politics in 2002, it wasn't until 2017, before he started getting involved in political activism and then in 2019 developed The United Party Project. Now at 48; six years later, Matt is building The United Party for the ballot in the 2029 General Election.
With a very varied background, Matt has been an actor, script writer, illustrator and film-maker, whilst also working in a variety of different sectors; both public and private, from marketing, publishing, events, domiciliary care, chambers of commerce, the MHRA, media, civil engineering, electrical engineering, logistics, and commercial property.
Matt's interests include film, french cinema, cooking, gardening, jazz music, embracing travel and culture, and illustrating.
Politically Matt has been an advocate of left and left of centre politics, but with a more measured view point that circles around the the centre of politics, balancing an ethical and yet pragmatic approach. His role in political activism came to prominence in a campaign to highlight and raise awareness of a bias in media output, in particular that of the BBC's news arm with the #BBCswitchoff campaign that trended around the world on social media. Matt ran the campaign anonymously with others to ensure it was organised neutrally, and to make it clear the campaign itself was bigger than the profile organising it, to set the tone that it wasn't about raising a media profile or fame seeking, but to send a clear message that spoke for a lot people. The campaign had a brief success in resonating with people from different sides of the political spectrum, who wanted more balance from the public service broadcaster, but also in bringing together those who would normally be on different sides of the argument.
Matt has previously been a Labour voter all his life but recognised the infighting within the party and its voting, support base was having a negative impact, resulting in an apathy that was being felt across the political spectrum as well. It was after the 2019 General Election result that Matt announced 'The United Party Project' to raise awareness of the growing numbers of millions of non-voters who didn't have a voice in parliament, to recognise there was a chronic problem on the ballot sheet and the UK's democratic system.
While still campaigning for a Labour government in recent years, it was after the 2024 general election results, that Matt recognised the need for a new party was still apparent as non-voters had increased in numbers from over 15 million people, to over 19 million people. In December of 2024 Matt announced that 'The United Party Project' would begin building a new political party for the 2029 General Election.
Matt continues to be an advocate for multilateralism, to rejoin the EU and collectively seek solutions for green issues and the climate crisis, through political means, but to also find ways through mutual co-operation to lift people out of poverty and end homelessness. His politics is based on compassion and collaboration, centred on hope, not cynicism. One that dares to dream of a better tomorrow.
